Steven Spielberg was originally offered to direct this film, but the producers couldn’t agree on the high salary he asked for. They eventually decided to wait until “Jaws” release in 1975. The movie turned out to be a huge success. They weren’t able to get him after that.
Guy Hamilton was to direct this movie. Italy was its primary location. But when something came up and the filming was moved to England, Hamilton backed out. Because of his status as a tax exile, at that time. Basically, he could only be in England for thirty days in a year.
Among the actresses who auidtioned for the role of Lois Lane were Anne Archer, Lesley Ann Warren, Deborah Raffin, Susan Blakely and Stockard Channing.
Actors considered for the part of Clark Kent were, Warren Beatty, James Caan, Kris Kristofferson, Nick Nolte, Robert Redford, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jon Voight. The role was turned down by Beatty and Redford.
Among the unknowns auditioned for the role were Ilya Salkind’s wife’s… dentist. Eventually, the Salkinds cast an almost unknown actor they kept coming back to from their earlier search. It was Christopher Reeve.
Christopher Reeve hit the gym so much during the making of the film that the traveling matte shots taken of him at the beginning of the shoot did not match the later shots, thus it had to be re-taken.
