Best Comic Books – It All Depends on Your Perspective

When deciding on which are the best comic books what are the categories, all time, this year or only ones with supper heroes? Without argument Superman and Batman have been the favorites for so long that they will always be at the top of any list.
The two most famous do come from the same company, DC Comics. What is little known is that the first Superman was a villain. Back in the early 1930′s Hitler was on his rise to power and was going to create a race of supermen. The idea was changed almost immediately because the second issue of Superman had him as a crime fighter. The original comic that Superman was in was named Action Comics.
Action comics #7 was when the alter ego Clark Kent was introduced to the world. Another little known fact is that the Clark Kent ego is a fictional representation of Clark Gable.
By the year 1941 when America entered the war, Superman was already in 300 newspapers worldwide.
Batman was a compilation of figures from the early part of the 20th century. By combining da Vinci’s flying machine, the Bat Whispers, the Mark of Zorro and Dracula the creator Bob Kane developed Batman. What a wild combination, but it worked and was first published in the Detective Comics #27.
These two famous super heroes went on for years and are to this day still going strong in not only comic strips but in movies as well.
Superman and Batman were so popular back in the beginning that even Uncle Sam enlisted them in the war effort. They helped to sell war bonds that supplied the government with the money to beat the Nazis.
Superman might have been first but Batman was the first super hero comic to make it to be a live action film.
See what I mean, the best comic books depends on your perspective.
Top 5 Unusual Comic Books Made Into Movies

Many blockbusters movies of the past few years have featured familiar characters – Batman, Spiderman, Superman. All of our favorite DC, Marvel, and Dark Horse comic book heroes are incarnated in films again and again, where the only thing more common than special powers is special effects. Computer animation and high definition lend to the high-budget fun. The Dark Knight was every bit as epic as the hype made it out to be; but even so, another Batman film is just another Batman film. Out on the edge, there are also plenty of more obscure, artful comics and graphic novels being made into really stunning films. You may not even realize that some of them were adapted from strip form to silver screen, but fortunately you don’t need to be familiar with the books to enjoy these five films.
Sin City – This movie was as stylish as the Frank Miller strip it was based on, cast in the silvery hues of film noir, with carefully chosen bits of color highlighting scenes here or there, drawing the eye in irresistibly. No surprise that one of the directors, Robert Rodriguez, won the Technical Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his artful cinematographic direction, particularly his groundbreaking work of shooting the whole film with high-definition digital cameras. The genre is pulp, so be warned that there is a great deal of cold-blooded brutality in this thriller.
Tank Girl – Who would have heard of this cult classic if it wasn’t for random airings on satellite TV? I sure wouldn’t have, and yet I am SO glad that I did. This movie is non-stop ridiculous action and fast-paced gags. It’s a dystopian, Road Warrior type future, where water is scarce and precious, and totally controlled by one monopolistic corporation. In her simple defiance and constant search to have a little fun, the eponymous main character, played by Lori Petty, manages to challenge the existing power dynamic.
Persepolis – This French film was based on a graphic novel by the same name, written by Marjane Satrapi. Unlike the other films on the list, it’s non-fiction. It is the autobiographical account of a young girl’s experiences growing up in post-revolutionary Iran. Between serious political turmoil and the usual growing pains, there is plenty of material for tragedy, comedy, and exhilarating scenes. Also setting it apart is the fact that it is in black and white, and entirely hand-animated, in contrast to Sin City’s black and white live-action shot in HD. The visuals are stunning, with a dreamy, illusory feeling.
Ghost World – Starring a young Scarlett Johansson, as well as Thora Birch and Steve Buscemi, this film was based on a comic book by Daniel Clowes. It’s dark comedy, telling the story of two teenage girls who have recently graduated from high school as they wade through apathy, cynicism, sarcasm, and the difficulties of moving forward. If it lacks the action and intensity of the other films, it certain makes up for it with quick dialogue and compelling characters.
V for Vendetta – Another dystopian future sets the landscape for this dark adaptation of the Alan Moore/David Lloyd comic book. The striking cinematography is best enjoyed on the high definition version, with the sets, coloring, and camera work all contributing to the dismal future London. High on violence and moral ambiguity, with stellar performances by the entire cast.
Keep your eye on the TV guide, as all of these movies will be sure to come around sooner or later or satellite TV, and you won’t want to miss one minute!

Superman Returns, the new film by Bryan Singer, is the fifth movie to tell the story of a simple young boy from another planet who falls to earth and grows up to be the Man of Steel, helping people and averting disasters that would end the world.
Here is a quick look at the first four films, that were made in the 70s and 80s.
Superman (1978) – The original film sees Christopher Reeve play Superman.
With the planet Krypton facing destruction, scientist Jor-El takes drastic measures to preserve the Kryptonian race – he sends his infant son Kal-El to Earth to become a champion of truth and justice. Kal-El grows up as Clark Kent and eventually learns the truth about his family and realises that he must use his abilities for good. Clark moves to Metropolis where he becomes a mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet newspaper, and also becomes his alter-ego, Superman, a defender of law and order. However, deep below Metropolis Lex Luthor is plotting evil. Can Superman thwart his nasty plans and save millions of innocent people?
Superman II (1980) – Christopher Reeve returns – The adventure continues.
Superman saves France by throwing a nuclear bomb deep into space. Unfortunately the bomb explodes, freeing three Kryptonian criminals from captivity. Meanwhile Superman has decided to relinquish his superhero powers to live happily ever after with Lois Lane. As the criminals, led by General Zod, join up with Lex Luthor to take over the world, Clark Kent has to decide whether to try to regain Superman’s powers and face his biggest battle yet.
Superman III (1983) – If the world’s most powerful computer can control even Superman…no one on earth is safe.
Superman has saved the world against villains from Earth and from Krypton, but will he cope when a super-computer, and its programmer, set out to destroy him? In between his attempts to save the world, Clark returns to his old High School and meets an old flame.
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) – Nuclear Power. In the best hands, it is dangerous. In the hands of Lex Luthor, it is pure evil. This is Superman’s greatest battle. And it is for all of us.
In an attempt to take over the world arms market Lex Luthor clones Superman to make Nuclear Man. Luthor hopes Nuclear Man will take on and beat Superman. Thankfully, Superman saves the Statue of Liberty, repulses a volcanic eruption of Mount Etna, and rebuilds the demolished Great Wall of China. And saved the world.
Superman Movie Review – Starring Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, and Marlon Brando

“Superman” (1978), starring Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder, is a terrific film. It’s much better than any of its many sequels. Christopher Reeve is perfect in his role as Superman. Gene Hackman also does an incredible acting job as Lex Luthor, his arch-rival. The story and special effects are also exceptional.
The movie begins on Krypton, a futuristic planet in a distant galaxy. Three arch-villains are on trial for committing deplorable crimes against Krypton. Jor-El (Brando) presides over the trial. A jury of three council members pronounce the arch-villains guilty. Their punishment is to be held captive in the Phantom Zone, a large mirror, and to fly through space for eternity.
Meanwhile, Jor-El is convinced that Krypton is about to be destroyed, though his council disagrees. He wants them all to evacuate, though they vote him down. In any case, Jor-El is able to allow his infant son Kol-El to escape the planet in a small crystalline spaceship and sent to Earth. Krypton does end up getting destroyed, killing everyone on the planet. Kol-El journeys through space for three years, finally crashing on Jonathan Kent’s farm in Smallville, Kansas in 1951. Jonathan is driving with his wife Martha when he hears a loud boom and gets a flat tire. As he gets out to fix it, Martha discovers a small boy near the crash scene. She decides to adopt him, against Jonathan’s better judgment. The car collapses, but the boy picks up the end of the car, whence they know he has special powers. They also see his burnt-out spaceship on the ground.
Jonathan and Martha raise Kol-El on their farm, giving him the name Clark. They insist that Clark hide his powers from everyone, though Clark finds himself hard-pressed to do so. Jonathan dies of a heart attack and Clark takes over the family farm.
Early one morning, Clark gets a mysterious call. He rushes to the barn, removes a piece of the floor, and discovers a glowing green crystal, which tells him to journey northward. He tells him mother he must leave, but gets a friend of his to help her run the farm. He then ventures out to the north pole with the crystal. He throws the crystal far out and it lands on the ice. The surrounding ice turns into a huge crystalline fortress. Clark goes into the fortress, finds the crystal inside, and receives a message from Jor-El, his long deceased father. Jor-El tells him his real name is Kol-El, and takes him on a 12-year journey to Krypton and back. By the time he returns, he’s wearing his famous red cape with the large S on the chest.
Kol-El maintains his alter ego as Clark Kent, a bumbling man with glasses, and gets a job for the Daily Planet, a large news agency in Metropolis. There he meets co-workers Lois Lane and Jimmy Olson. He develops a crush on Lois, though as Clark, she thinks he’s a fool. He takes her out to lunch. She ends up getting mugged and nearly killed, but he secretly catches the bullet and saves her life.
That night, Lois is sent out on a helicopter to do a story, when a disaster strikes. The helicopter gets caught on some loose wires on top of the Daily Planet and ends up dangling on the side of the building. The door opens and Lois grabs on for her life. Clark spots her and quickly changes into his uniform and flies up to save her along with the helicopter. He then performs several other heroic stunts, stunning everyone in Metropolis.
Now every news agency in town wants to get the scoop on this mysterious caped wonder. He pays a visit to Lois and she gets the full story on him. He ends up taking her on a flight over Metropolis. Shortly after he leaves, she comes up with the name Superman for him.
Meanwhile, Lex Luthor, the world’s leading criminal mind, operating 200 feet below Park Avenue in Metropolis, is devising the crime of the century. Once he learns of Superman, he realizes he’s facing the challenge of the century as well, but he comes up with an ingenious plan for killing him. Luthor reasons that kryptonite, debris from Krypton, would be lethal to Superman. He also learns that such debris was found in Addis Ababa in 1948, so he sets out to retrieve this meterorite. He also carries out his plan of diverting two nuclear missiles from their intended trajectories, one toward a critical point along the San Andreas Fault in order to destroy California and build a new empire along the west coast, and the other inadvertently headed toward Hackensack, New Jersey.
Lex lures Superman into his secret hideout by broadcasting an ultrasonic message which only he can hear, telling him that he’s releasing gas into Metropolis which will wipe out half its population. Superman arrives as quickly as he can, drilling himself underground and breaking the large metal door. Lex then explains to Superman that the gas wasn’t real but was just a way of getting him there. He then tells Superman of his plan for wiping out California. Superman looks for the detonator of the missiles, which Lex leads him to believe are inside a lead container, which he can’t see through. Superman opens the container and is horrified to find a glowing hunk of kryptonite attached to a chain. Lex places the chain around Superman’s neck and into the swimming pool, where he helplessly begins to drown.
Lex’s assistant Miss Tessmacher agrees to save Superman under the conditiion that he saves her mother first, who lives in Hackensack. This means that he won’t be able to prevent the other missile from striking the San Andreas Fault, near where his friends Jim and Lois have been sent on assignment, but he agrees in any case. She throws the chain off his neck and he rushes out to stop the missile headed for Hackensack. He is unable to stop the other missile on time, however. As a result, California experiences a horrible earthquake. Superman first restores the fault line by going underground and picking it up. Then he saves a bus from falling off the Golden Gate Bridge. He performs several other heroic stunts in California. He saves Jim Olson from falling off the top of a dam, but he is unable to save Lois at first, who’s fallen into a crack in the ground quickly filling with dirt. Lois ends up suffocating to death before he can save her. Superman’s only recourse is to fly around the world repeatedly as fast as he can in order to turn back time to before the crack formed and save her.
The movie ends with Superman capturing Lex Luthor and his assistant Otis and sending them to jail for their deplorable crime.

Superman is a timeless figure that is known by everyone, regardless of age and race. Since 1938, this superhero has starred in many comic books, cartoons and movies. His image can also be found in cards and action figures. And, even though many improvements have been made in the comic art due to the advances in printing technology, the red and yellow S on his chest has remained the same throughout the ages. And, its appeal to the public has never faded. As a matter of fact, anyone who sees this icon will be able to recognize it. That S can only stand for one person – Superman!
Be A Superhero Too!
How does one define a superhero? With the way he can wear tights and run around with a cape, he must be a very confident individual who can easily express himself without fear of ridicule or disapproval. Be a Hero to Your Child!
Perhaps now that your friends have grown out of it, you now collect comic books with your son. And, you never fail to tell him about the collection that you have accumulated in the past. You also took him to watch the movie and gave him a recap of the Superman stats and info in your head. So, even though you are already an adult and wearing a pair of Superman cufflinks is the last thing on your mind, be his hero for today and wear the gift he has studiously searched for you. Turner Broadcasting’ Cartoon Network Channel is perhaps one of the most appreciated cable television for children. It was launched in 1992 in United States. This channel has gained the audience with its considerable library of animations. Here are some of the most popular cartoons, many of them as reviewed on Cartoon-secrets.com – some of them inherited from generation to generation and the other newer: Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo, The Flintstones, Dexter’s Laboratory, Power Puff Girls, Codename: Kids Next Door, Courage the Cowardly Dog, The Grim Adventure of Billy & Mandy, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Camp Lazlo.
Tom and Jerry are the legendary cat-mouse pair, responsible for some of the most funny and unforgettable scenes of animation. They have delighted and gained more and more fans along time and won seven awards.
Scooby-Doo’s shows are numerous. They evolved along time through more and more inspired series on the stream with the latest scientific conquests in the field of computers. However, they have preserved their ace, the mistery waiting to be revealed, the creepy atmosphere, suspense, thrills and harrowing adventures; this is what gave the charms to this cartoon and gained its fans forever.
The Flintstones, Fred and Wilma, and their neighbours the Rubbles, Barney and Betty, the town of Bedrock, vehicles propelled by the driver’s feet, Dino, the dog-dinosaur and the adventures of the Stone Age transformed into a modern atmosphere. Nothing new and still, so fresh every time you see them.
Dexter’s Laboratory. This cartoon series is about a boy genius, a junior scientist called Dexter, his passion for scientific discoveries and disgust for “girly” feelings, weaknesses; Dexter’s older sister Dee Dee is exactly the opposite, but together they form an A team that gives delightful moments to the audience.
Johnny Bravo with his Elvis-like appearance, his bulging biceps, and overflowing ego are only a few of the qualities this mama’s boy has. He makes you laugh and you somehow adore him although you hate everything that he does. In fact he is his own worst nightmare wherever he goes.
The Powerpuff Girls. Three supernatural superhero girls created with a secret ingredient by Professor Plutonium in a laboratory near Townsville fight against bad guys. A mayor, too small to be good and candies as fuel for super-heroines, and this is just part of the story.
Codename: Kids Next Door. Five 10-year-old tenacious kids fight to preserve the innocence of the childhood which is permanently endangered by the world of adults which is always ruled by implacable rules. Besides the drama you can easily laugh and enjoy their mustard or sweets based weapons.
Courage the Cowardly Dog describes the isolated life of a very timid, timorous and scared dog which has to fight against horrifying monsters to protect himself and his owners, especially Muriel who is very devoted to her dog, while her husband Eustace scares the poor dog all the time and enjoys it.
Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. Children create imaginary friends which give them the needed help to pass over the obstacles and misfortunes of life. However there is a time when that created hero is no longer wanted so he has to retire somewhere, and that’s what Foster’s home is for.
Camp Lazlo. The camp where the Bean Scouts spend their summer is a place where rules are observed and the nature is a temple. Everything was in an orderly fashion until Lazlo appeared.

Superman Returns? How Superman’s Creators Recovered a Copyright and How You Can Too

The creators of Superman sold their copyright during the Great Depression for $130. Their heirs are now in the process of reclaiming that valuable copyright. Their tale is a graphic demonstration of the important copyright reversion rules under the Copyright Act. Under the Act, artists who sold their works many years ago are entitled to recover them, even if they signed contracts that said otherwise. This article explains the importance of these copyright reversion rights and what artists must do to reclaim the rights to their work. demonstration of the important copyright reversion rules under the Copyright Act. Under the Act, artists who sold their works many years ago are entitled to recover them, even if they signed contracts that said otherwise. This article explains the importance of these copyright reversion rights and what artists must do to reclaim the rights to their work.
During the Great Depression, Jerry Siegel and Jerome Shuster created Superman, the now-famous hero who fights to defend truth, justice, and the American Way. Siegel and Shuster then sold the Man of Steel to Detective Comics for $130. In hindsight, we can safely conclude this was not a great deal for the sellers. Indeed, only the daily workings of Congress rival such a gargantuan waste of valuable property. But Superman’s creators are not alone. Artists of all kinds have found themselves in a similar position, forced to sell the copyrights in their creative works to make ends meet. Those artists should know that, as with practically all superhero tales, the Superman story has a happy ending. And theirs can too.
In most walks of life, a sale, like a diamond, is forever. Absent unusual circumstances, if you sell your car, it is gone. You have no more right to it, and you never will. Most authors of copyrighted works – be they musicians, artists, authors or architects – probably assume that the same rules apply to their copyright: once assigned, the copyright is gone forever.
It is not. The Copyright Act, in provisions that are virtually unique in all of American law, allow the author of a copyrighted work can reclaim his or her copyright many decades later by jumping through the right legal hoops at just the right time. Because of these reversion provisions, Mr. Siegel’s heirs are in the process of reclaiming the Superman copyright, a process that will result in the multimillion dollar transfer of wealth from Warner Brothers to them. All other authors of valuable copyrighted material-and the heirs of such authors-should pay attention to their story.
The copyright reversion rules under the Copyright Act are complicated, and it is likely impossible in a short article to turn a lay person into an expert. In light of the complexity of the process and the consequences of failure, it makes very little sense for most copyright authors to try and reclaim copyrights on their own. Legal help is almost certainly required.
But when should a copyright author who assigned his or her work seek legal counsel to start the process? The answer depends on when the copyrighted work was first created. For all copyrighted works created before January 1, 1978, the Copyright Act of 1909 provides the ground rules. Originally, copyrights under the 1909 Act lasted 28 years. (Was that it in the beginning, or was there always a 28-year renewal term?) At the end of the 28 years, the copyright ended, and the material was freely available to the public. Congress has added to a copyright’s life expectancy on multiple occasions since then, and these days a copyright under the 1909 Act can last up to 95 years. The right to terminate an assignment and reclaim a copyright under the 1909 Act can occur after the first 28 years, at the end of 56 years, or at the end of 75 years.
The rules are different for copyrighted works created after January 1, 1978, because the Copyright Act of 1976 applies. Under the 1976 Act, the copyright lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years. And a copyright assignment can be terminated-and the copyright reclaimed-after 35 years. This means, of course, that the earliest copyright reversions under the 1976 Act will begin in 2013. Copyright authors like Paul McCartney and Elton John are-or at least should be-preparing to reclaim their rights. The current owners of their copyrights are no doubt planning their strategies to hang on.
Two other points are worth noting. First, the copyright reversion right is non-waivable. In other words, even if the copyright author agreed to give up his or her reversion rights, those rights still exist. The usual rules of contract law do not apply. Nor do the usual rules regarding probate. A copyright assigned through a will is not lost forever. The heirs of the dead copyright author-the very people the copyright author apparently did not want to have the copyright-are entitled to reclaim it anyway.
Second, and finally, copyright authors should not wait until the last minute to begin the process of reclaiming their property. The Copyright Act requires authors to give notice before the reversion occurs, and the notice period begins years before the copyright reversion can be seized. Moreover, legal counsel might require some time to investigate and prepare your case, so waiting until the last second could potentially prejudice your rights.
As anybody who has watched the Superman movies knows, Superman always comes back. He certainly has come back to the heirs of those who created him. And if you or a relative created a valuable copyrighted work, you may find that your creation can return as well.
Eyeglasses and Contact Lenses – More Style, Same Utility
- Posted by Luther on November 17th, 2011 filed in Health And Fitness
- Comment now »
At one time, promotions on television advertised a new,
sexier you if you elected to lose the glasses and pop in a
pair of contact lenses. This image has always been
demonstrated in Superman comics, television programs and
movies.
He’s a bit of a geek or too normal a guy, but when the
glasses come off – he’s Superman. Fortunately, the image-
makers and shakers that relegated eyeglasses to the
awkward, the nerd gear of decades past has begun to embrace
glasses for the fashionable, functional necessity they have
become.
The differences between glasses and contact lenses are more
related to personal issues of comfort than to image.
Arguments can be made in support of contacts over
eyeglasses.
For example, contact lenses are worn directly over the eye
allowing natural vision and no distortion as some eyeglass
wearers may experience because of the small gap between the
lens of the glasses and your eye.
There is always a constant awareness of the frames as well
as the reflections off the backside of the lens. While most
eyeglass wearers become so accustomed as to hardly notice
the discrepancy, it becomes more pronounced when switching
between contacts and glasses.
Glasses can fog up when the temperature changes and they
might be a distraction during physical activities,
especially sports where you don’t want your glasses to be
broken. Contacts suffer neither of these. Eyeglasses can
be made with tinting lenses that allow them to turn into
functional sunglasses, but contact lens wearers can pick
any pair of sunglasses they want.
For the particularly fashion conscious, contact lenses
coordinate with everything in your wardrobe. But for all
their differences, both require cleaning and gentle care.
Both correct astigmatism (irregular cornea shape) and with
modern technology, both are very affordable. A new pair of
eyeglasses and a new pair of contacts is comparable in
price for the same prescription.
The decision between contacts or eyeglasses is no longer
one associated with social stigma or social image, but
rather of the image and look you want to project to the
world. It’s all truly dependent in this day of modern
fashion on what makes you feel comfortable and look great.
